Which academic levels do we support in Hedge End?

Tutoring Heroes tutors can provide high-quality tutoring for each stage of your child’s academic journey, from Key Stage 1 through to A-level.

Maths tutoring for primary students

Our experienced teachers work with primary students of the following levels across Hedge End:

  • Years 1 & 2 (Key Stage 1)
  • Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 (Key Stage 2)

We have a team of expert maths tutors who lead fun lessons online in maths, English and science for Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) and Key Stage 2 (Years 3, 4, 5, and 6). Each of our tailored tuition sessions aligns with the school curriculum, ensuring that lessons support what students are already learning in class with their primary school teachers.

By adapting to each child’s individual learning preferences and goals, our tutors build strong relationships with their students, helping them develop essential mathematical skills while keeping learning engaging and enjoyable.

What are maths topics and challenges for Key Stage 1 children?

During Key Stage 1, children are introduced to fundamental maths concepts that are designed to build a strong foundation for future learning. They learn number recognition, counting, addition, subtraction, basic multiplication and division, fractions, shapes, measurement, and simple problem-solving.

It’s quite common for children to struggle with understanding place value at this stage, as grasping tens and ones can be challenging. Problem-solving and reasoning can also pose difficulties, especially when applying maths concepts in different contexts.

Memorising number bonds and times tables can also be tricky, but with the right support from a patient teacher and tutor, younger children will develop confidence and fluency in these areas.

At Tutoring Heroes, all our tutors understand the importance of leading fun lessons for children in a positive learning environment. This helps our students to start building a strong conceptual understanding in maths at Key Stage 1, which will continue to serve them throughout the rest of their classroom learning journey in maths, and other maths-heavy subjects like physics, and chemistry in secondary school.

What are maths topics and challenges for Key Stage 2 children?

Key Stage 2 children build on their foundational maths knowledge. In addition to furthering their skills covered at Key Stage 1, they also learn some slightly more difficult concepts, like fractions, decimals, percentages, geometry, statistics, and basic algebraic reasoning.

In our experience, students at this stage can find fractions and decimals particularly challenging, as they require a strong understanding of number relationships. Wordier maths problems are also introduced at this stage and can be something that children find challenging, as they involve complex ideas, and the ability to apply multiple maths concepts at once.

Achieving time table fluency is essential at this stage, and those who struggle with recall may find more advanced topics harder to grasp without additional support and practice. This is an area our tutors are well-trained to address – parents of the students we work with often notice a considerable difference in confidence with times table recall, within just a few weeks.

Preparation for SATs & learning exam techniques

One of the best times to give your child a boost with private tutoring is at a major milestone at the start of their academic journey – when they are approaching their first school exams.

Exams can be a daunting experience for young learners. Success isn’t just about recalling subject knowledge—it also requires effective exam technique. Knowing how to manage time, cope with stress, carefully read exam questions, navigate an exam paper, and maximise scoring opportunities are all crucial skills.

Our personalised, one-on-one tutoring helps prepare students for SATs, 11+, 13+, and school entrance exams by offering practice tests and confidence-building strategies, ensuring they perform at their best.

Targeted year 2 SATs exam preparation

Many students do not develop core exam skills until later in their education. In an ideal world, students should start being coached in the application of exam skills in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2, to build strong foundational skills for SATs and school entrance exams.

Classroom teachers often lack the time to focus on individual exam skills for every student ahead of year 2 and year 6 SATs – especially where larger classes are concerned, and even with the help of in-class teaching assistants. Fortunately, our dedicated primary maths tutors can help young students work on these skills, so they feel prepared and capable going into their first major exams.

Exam skills are an essential part of a child’s education, and we believe that every student deserves the opportunity to develop these abilities for their SATs.

Targeted year 6 SATs exam preparation

Private maths tutoring can be especially beneficial in the lead-up to Year 6 SATs. Our tutors offer customised support built around each student’s learning preferences, to enhance confidence and academic performance during assessments.

In preparation for the year 6 SATs, we focus on key areas such as arithmetic, problem-solving, and reasoning, while ensuring students receive comprehensive guidance in relation to topics they personally find most challenging.

One-on-one tutoring provides individualised attention, helping students grasp complex concepts and develop resilience under exam conditions. Structured support during year 6 – at the final stage of primary school – can also lead to a smoother transition into comprehensive school.

Maths tutoring for Key Stage 3 and GCSE students in Hedge End

Key Stage 3 covers Years 7, 8, and 9 in secondary school. GCSE covers year 10, and 11. During these stages, students build on the mathematical concepts introduced in primary school and begin to engage with more abstract and complex topics.

The curriculum includes number operations, Algebraic concepts, geometry, ratios, proportions, probability, and statistics. Students are also introduced to advanced problem-solving techniques and logical reasoning, which lay the groundwork for GCSE and A-level maths.

Challenges Faced by Key Stage 3 Students

As students transition from primary to secondary school, the pace of learning increases. They are expected to grasp slightly more abstract concepts, such as algebraic equations, trigonometry basics, and data interpretation.

Many students struggle with topics like fractions, decimals, and percentages, particularly when applying them in real-world contexts. Additionally, the larger class sizes in secondary school can make it difficult for some students to receive the individual attention they need, leading to gaps in understanding that can persist into later years.

Private tutoring for GCSE and Key Stage 3 maths in Hedge End

For those secondary students who find maths difficult, a tutor can break down complex concepts into manageable steps, reinforcing their understanding and boosting their confidence.

Even advanced students who are naturally gifted in maths can benefit from tutoring, as it keeps them engaged and challenges them beyond the standard curriculum. Tutoring Heroes tutors can introduce enrichment activities, such as problem-solving puzzles, analytical skills, and advanced mathematical skills, to keep high-achieving students motivated and inspired.

Framing secondary education positively is absolutely essential if a child hopes to go on to higher education, which requires more in-depth study and learning.

Though the move from primary to secondary school maths can be challenging and sometimes stressful for students, a teacher with lots of teaching methods at their disposal – like our tutors – can create a supportive learning environment, and a positive learning experience.

Which Hedge End secondary school students can we support?

As Tutoring Heroes provide online, 1-to-1 lessons, we can support secondary school students from Wildern School in Hedge End, or any of the other local area comprehensive schools, such as:
