How Tutoring Heroes began
Our story started in 2019, with our very first maths lessons held at Cobo Community Centre in Guernsey. Originally supporting just a few students at a time, the demand for expert tutoring quickly grew. We expanded to larger venues and soon opened services in Jersey.
When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, we pivoted to online tutoring. It turned out to be one of the best decisions we made. The flexibility of remote lessons allowed us to pair each student with the perfect tutor, regardless of location. Today, our online science tutors continue to deliver exceptional private tuition to students across the Channel Islands — with results that speak for themselves.
What our online science lessons cover
Our science tuition spans every major stage of the UK curriculum:
Key Stage 1 & 2
We support primary school students in Jersey by making science enjoyable and engaging. At these levels, children explore the basics of Earth Science, plants, animals, and materials. Our tutors introduce fun activities to instil curiosity and build foundational knowledge.
Key Stage 3
This is where the science curriculum starts to become more structured. Our lessons focus on preparing students for secondary school challenges, including more complex scientific theories, lab investigations, and writing detailed explanations using the language of physics and biology.
GCSE Combined Science & Triple Science
We have extensive experience supporting students with Jersey Combined Science. Whether your child is preparing for GCSE maths to help with science topics or tackling exam questions in Chemistry, our tutors cover it all — including:
-
Biological Sciences: cells, systems, evolution
-
Physical Science classes: forces, energy, electricity
-
Chemistry: atoms, reactions, periodic table
We’re also familiar with all major exam boards and provide help with revision classes and past paper practice.
A-level Science
Our experienced tutors provide advanced support in A-level Physics, A-level Chemistry, and A-level Biology. Topics include:
-
Cell Biology, genetics, and homeostasis in Biology
-
Organic and inorganic chemistry
-
Mechanics, thermodynamics, and nuclear physics
For students also tackling A-level maths, we help them connect concepts between maths and science, especially with data interpretation and calculations.
Why science tutoring is important
Science is more than just a school subject — it builds critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills. It encourages students to question the world around them and to approach problems logically.
Our private tutoring services are designed to:
-
Reinforce what your child is learning in school
-
Provide personalised lessons at a learning level suited to them
-
Help students prepare for Jersey entrance exams or national assessments
-
Improve confidence in exam techniques and applying knowledge to new scenarios
Whether your child is struggling with a specific topic or simply wants to deepen their understanding, our tutors are here to support their academic goals.
Our teaching approach: Personalised, supportive, and effective
Every student learns differently, and our approach reflects that.
Tailored teaching methods
We develop personalised learning experiences based on your child’s strengths, challenges, and interests. Our tutors use various teaching techniques, including visual aids, interactive experiments (online!), quizzes, and note-making strategies.
We also cater to all VARK learning styles — whether your child is visual, auditory, reading/writing-oriented, or kinaesthetic.
A confident learner is a successful learner. That’s why our lessons focus not only on knowledge but also on building self-esteem and curiosity. We help students develop good learning habits, organisational skills, and time management strategies that will support them throughout their education.

Preparing for exams with expert guidance
Revision sessions and exam techniques
In the lead-up to exams, we offer focused revision sessions to sharpen subject knowledge and boost confidence. Students practise real exam questions, learn essential exam techniques, and develop solid maths skills to handle data-heavy sections — especially in GCSE combined science.
Supporting both struggling and high-achieving students
Science tutoring isn’t just for those falling behind. Many of our students are already doing well at school but want to push further. We offer:
-
Stretch tasks for gifted learners
-
Coaching for entrance exams
-
Help with additional maths to support scientific learning
-
Support for those taking on harder courses or extra qualifications
Every child deserves to be challenged at the right learning level, and our tutors adjust content accordingly.
Lessons that fit your family’s schedule
We understand how busy life can be, which is why we offer private lessons at a convenient time — whether that’s after school, evenings, or weekends. Our online tutors are flexible and committed to providing high-quality instruction whenever it works best for you.
Our online platform: A smarter way to learn
We use a powerful learning platform called Whiteboard, which allows for interactive, visual, and collaborative online sessions. Students can:
-
Draw diagrams and graphs
-
Annotate slides in real time
-
Work through calculations together
-
Receive digital notes and homework assignments
This dynamic space makes the learning process more effective and helps us keep learning fun.
What makes a Tutoring Heroes tutor different?
Our tutors are selected for more than just qualifications. We look for a genuine passion for teaching, a positive person with a strong desire to share knowledge with children.
Each of our science tutors has:
-
A strong background in science, with many holding degrees in physics, chemistry, biology, or related fields
-
Previous experience tutoring or working as a teacher in school settings
-
A proven ability to work with a range of people, especially aged children and teenagers
-
A commitment to building confidence in science and making lessons enjoyable
Beyond science: Subjects we also teach
While we’re specialists in science, we also offer tutoring in:
-
Maths tuition (including complex math concepts and math preparation)
-
English literature and English language
-
Occasionally other popular subjects, including foreign languages (based on tutor availability)
We find that students who improve their confidence in math concepts often see improvements in science too — especially in GCSE maths and A-level science.

Meet some of our tutors
Emily
Emily is a bright and dedicated tutor with a passion for maths and physics. Currently studying Physics at the University of Warwick, she is fascinated by how mathematical theory helps explain everything from planetary motion to electricity.
Emily’s tutoring sessions are thoughtful, well-paced, and highly student-focused. She takes pride in making difficult topics more manageable and helping students gain confidence through steady progress. She especially enjoys supporting students who feel unsure of their abilities and showing them just how capable they really are.
When she’s not tutoring, Emily enjoys rock climbing, stargazing, and playing the piano. She also volunteers at her university’s science outreach events, helping younger students see the fun and beauty in physics. A quirky fact about Emily? She built her own telescope as part of a summer project!
In the future, she hopes to work in astrophysics or science communication — combining her love of space and teaching.

Harry
Harry is an encouraging, down-to-earth tutor who blends strong subject knowledge with a practical, student-led approach. His goal is to build real confidence by focusing not just on answers, but on helping students understand the “why” behind each topic.
Currently studying Electronic Engineering at the University of York, Harry particularly enjoys maths topics such as proof and functions, as well as physics and control systems. He also brings a clear and calm teaching style to science more broadly, always linking concepts to real-world applications.
Outside of tutoring, Harry is a multi-instrumentalist and huge music enthusiast — you’ll often find him collecting records or playing guitar. He also has a passion for tech and has been involved in impressive broadcast engineering projects. Friendly and intellectually curious, Harry is the kind of tutor who students not only learn from but enjoy spending time with.

Hazel
Hazel is a focused and passionate chemistry tutor who brings energy, clarity, and structure to her lessons. She loves helping students find their “aha!” moments, especially when a once-confusing topic suddenly clicks.
Currently studying chemistry at university, Hazel is particularly drawn to organic and analytical chemistry. Her favourite topics include spectroscopy and bonding, and she’s fascinated by how chemistry links with biology and physics. Whether she’s guiding a student through GCSE atomic structure or exploring complex A-level problems, Hazel always makes learning feel rewarding.
Outside her academic life, Hazel enjoys running with friends, knitting (she’s currently working on a jumper!), and languages — she’s studied both Russian and Latin. Her sessions are warm, engaging, and thoughtfully paced, making her an excellent guide for students at all levels.
